Message from Secretary-General Rodney Taylor
on the occasion of the 36th Anniversary of the Caribbean Telecommunications Union

28th April 2025

Today, it is with immense pride and gratitude that we celebrate the 36th Anniversary of the Caribbean Telecommunications Union (CTU).

Since it was established on 28th April 1989, the CTU has been a cornerstone of regional collaboration in telecommunications and information and communication technologies (ICTs). Guided by the vision of our founding members, the CTU was created to harmonise policies, foster innovation and promote the development of ICT for the economic, social and cultural advancement of our Caribbean people.

Over the past three and a half decades, the CTU has evolved in keeping with a rapidly changing digital landscape. From the early days of promoting liberalisation of telecommunications markets to today’s complex agenda of digital transformation, cybersecurity, digital inclusion, artificial intelligence and the building of a Single ICT Space, the CTU has consistently adapted, advocated and led. The CTU Member States, together with regional organisations, international partners and other stakeholders across the public and private sectors, have built a legacy of tangible impact in advancing the Caribbean’s digital agenda.

The CTU stands at the forefront of driving the region’s digital development, promoting a future in which all Caribbean citizens can access and benefit from the opportunities of a connected world. Its work has expanded beyond telecommunications to embrace the full potential of ICTs to empower people, enable sustainable development and bridge the digital divide.

As the CTU marks this significant milestone, we reflect on the dedication and foresight of those who laid the foundation for the CTU and on the contributions of all those who have worked tirelessly to advance its mission. The CTU also looks ahead with renewed determination. The journey towards a fully inclusive, resilient and sustainable digital Caribbean continues. It calls for bold leadership, innovative partnerships and an unwavering commitment to ensuring that no one is left behind.

On behalf of the CTU Secretariat, I extend sincere thanks to our Member States, partners, and all stakeholders for your enduring support and collaboration. Your contributions have been essential to the CTU’s achievements and will remain vital as we chart the path forward.

Let us continue to work together, with renewed energy and purpose, to realise the full promise of digital transformation for the Caribbean.

Happy 36th Anniversary to the Caribbean Telecommunications Union!
