Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago – 14 June 2026 – The Caribbean Telecommunications Union (CTU) extends its warmest congratulations to the Government of Barbados, the Central Bank of Barbados, the Barbados banking sector, and all stakeholders involved in the successful launch of BiMPay, Barbados’ national instant digital payments system. The platform allows individuals, businesses, and government entities to send and receive funds instantly, securely, and around the clock, representing a major milestone in the country’s digital transformation journey.

The introduction of BiMPay places Barbados among a growing group of countries that have embraced modern instant payment infrastructure to improve economic efficiency, expand financial inclusion, and accelerate digital innovation. Similar systems have transformed the payments landscape in countries such as the United Kingdom, India, Brazil, Singapore, and across the European Union, where real-time payments have reduced transaction costs, improved convenience, increased transparency, and supported the growth of digital commerce.

Commenting on the achievement, CTU Secretary-General Rodney Taylor stated:

“The launch of BiMPay demonstrates Barbados’ commitment to building a modern digital economy that works for everyone. By enabling instant, interoperable payments across financial institutions and digital wallets, Barbados is creating new opportunities for citizens and businesses to participate more fully in the digital economy. This is exactly the kind of innovation that the Caribbean needs to accelerate inclusive and sustainable development.”

The CTU notes that one of the most significant benefits of instant payment systems is their ability to advance digital financial inclusion. By enabling persons who do not currently have traditional bank accounts to participate in digital transactions through alternative payment mechanisms, BiMPay has the potential to bring thousands of previously underserved and unbanked citizens into the formal economy. This can increase access to financial services, improve economic participation, and create new opportunities for entrepreneurship and wealth creation.

The system is also expected to benefit micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) by improving cash flow, reducing payment delays, lowering transaction costs, and supporting new digital business models. Faster settlement of transactions means businesses gain quicker access to funds, helping to stimulate commerce and strengthen economic activity across the country.

The CTU further recognizes BiMPay as an important foundational component of the broader digital ecosystem. Modern payment infrastructure complements other key elements of digital transformation, including digital identity, e-government services, cybersecurity, data governance, and digital entrepreneurship.

Looking beyond Barbados, the CTU sees BiMPay as an important step toward a larger regional vision.

“We envision a Caribbean where money moves as freely and efficiently as information,” Taylor added. “Just as a phone call, text message, or email can reach any destination in the region almost instantly, we should aspire to a future where individuals and businesses can make cross-border payments across CARICOM in real time, safely, securely, and at low cost.”

Such a future would support the objectives of the CARICOM Single ICT Space, strengthen regional integration, facilitate intra-regional trade, reduce the cost of remittances and cross-border transactions, and create new opportunities for Caribbean businesses to participate in a truly integrated digital market.

The CTU therefore encourages all Caribbean countries to continue investing in modern digital payment infrastructure and to work collaboratively toward regional interoperability frameworks that can eventually enable seamless cross-border payments throughout the Caribbean Community.

The successful launch of BiMPay demonstrates what is possible when policymakers, regulators, financial institutions, and technology partners work together with a shared vision. The CTU looks forward to supporting regional dialogue and collaboration aimed at extending these benefits across the wider Caribbean.
