Shaping Caribbean Telecommunications…30 Years Later

Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago (29th March 2019) – In 1989, the CARICOM Heads of Government recognising the importance of telecommunications in strengthening the process of integration and fostering development, took the bold step of establishing the Caribbean Telecommunications Union (CTU). Thirty years later, the CTU has fulfilled the mandate initially set out by the Heads; has broadened its remit to include information and communication technologies (ICT), making it relevant to the prevailing dynamic technological environment; and created the internal structures and collaborative processes to enable it to be more responsive to the needs of its 20 Member countries and other members.
In recognition of the need for greater collaboration between its members and other stakeholders, another significant change was made by the CTU – the expansion of its membership to include non-CARICOM States, private sector and civil society organisations.

The CTU is at the forefront of activities to harmonise policies and practices for the development of the Caribbean ICT sector. The CTU established the first Internet Governance Forum (IGF) in the world and because of the CTU’s leadership, the Caribbean is the only region with an IGF policy framework. The CTU is also at the forefront of harmonising spectrum management policies and practices in the Caribbean. The organisation has a demonstrated track record for the successful coordination of regional ICT Projects and has been the executing organisation for the projects of many international development agencies.

In commemoration of its 30th Anniversary and the 15th Anniversary of its Caribbean Internet Governance Forum (CIGF), the CTU will be hosting a week of activities under the theme: Digital Transformation…Do It!. The event is scheduled for April 29th to May 3rd 2019 and will take place at the Hyatt Regency Trinidad, 1 Wrightson Road, Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago.

The slate of activities includes a Summit and Ministerial Seminar as well as other partner events. The week at a glance is as follows:
