11th February 2025
Today, as we observe International Day of Women and Girls in Science (IDWGS), the Caribbean Telecommunications Union (CTU) Secretariat reaffirms its commitment to empowering women and girls in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Science and innovation are critical drivers of sustainable development and the full participation of women and girls in these fields is essential for building a more inclusive and technologically advanced Caribbean.
The 2025 theme, “Unpacking STEM Careers: Her Voice in Science,” underscores the importance of amplifying the voices of women in STEM, increasing visibility for female role models, and expanding opportunities for young girls to explore and pursue careers in science and technology. It challenges us to examine the barriers that hinder gender parity in STEM fields and to work collectively toward dismantling them.
This year also marks two significant milestones in the global movement for gender equality in science: the 10th anniversary of the International Day of Women and Girls in Science (IDWGS) and the 30th anniversary of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action—a landmark commitment to advancing gender equality worldwide. These anniversaries serve as important reminders of the progress made and the work still required to achieve true gender equity in STEM fields.
However, despite advancements, gender disparities persist. According to UNESCO, women account for only 33% of researchers globally, and in some STEM disciplines, female participation is as low as 28%. In the Caribbean, while there has been an increase in female enrollment in higher education, there remains a significant gap in STEM leadership, research positions and career progression. Many young girls still face societal and systemic barriers that discourage them from pursuing careers in these fields.
The CTU encourages Caribbean governments, private sector partners, and regional institutions to strengthen policies and initiatives that foster greater gender inclusivity in science. We must continue to provide mentorship, scholarships and career development opportunities that support young girls in developing the digital and scientific skills necessary for the future workforce.
As we embrace the theme “Unpacking STEM Careers: Her Voice in Science,” let us work together to amplify the voices of girls and women, break down barriers, challenge stereotypes and create an environment where women and girls can thrive in science and technology. By doing so, we secure a brighter, more innovative and more resilient Caribbean.
