Girls in ICT Day forms part of a global initiative led by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU). Observed annually since 2011 on the fourth Thursday of April, the initiative aims to inspire and empower girls and young women to pursue studies and careers in information and communication technologies (ICT). It responds directly to the persistent gender digital divide by promoting greater inclusion, participation, and leadership of women within the digital sector. In doing so, it reinforces the importance of ensuring that women are not only beneficiaries of the digital economy, but active contributors to its advancement and innovation.
In recognition of Girls in ICT Day, the Caribbean Telecommunications Union (CTU) will host a live, interactive online quiz competition as its flagship activity. The event will provide an engaging platform for students across the region to participate in a collaborative and technology-driven learning experience, with opportunities to win prizes.
The competition will focus on artificial intelligence (AI) and its role in sustainable development, reflecting the growing relevance of emerging technologies within Caribbean digital transformation agendas. Through real-time participation, students will be introduced to key AI concepts and applications in a format that is both accessible and stimulating.
While the activity adopts a simple and familiar structure, it is designed to demonstrate an important educational principle: that learning can be dynamic, inclusive, and enjoyable. By fostering curiosity and confidence in ICT among young participants—particularly girls—the initiative contributes to building a more equitable and future-ready digital workforce in the Caribbean.
